Auto-reply to Instagram comments with AI: setup guide
Auto-reply to Instagram comments: the AI writes one short public reply to each comment, skips spam, and leaves prices and order details for the DM.

A post takes off and the comments pile up: "price?", "do you have it in M?", "how do I order?". While the team tries to keep up with DMs, comments go unanswered, and the next person who sees an unanswered comment leaves without asking. Auto-replying to Instagram comments closes exactly that gap. This post explains how comment replies work in inTusell, how to set them up and where they stop.
Quick answer
inTusell collects comments on your Instagram posts in the inbox and writes one short, public AI reply to each. It answers from your knowledge base, does not invent what it does not know and skips spam with links. For orders or personal details it invites the customer to DM; replying by private message opens after Meta approval.
What is Instagram comment automation?
Instagram comment automation means software reads the comments under your posts and answers them on your behalf. Simple tools do this with keywords: someone writes "price" and gets a canned sentence. inTusell is an AI sales assistant that understands the comment.
inTusell is an AI sales assistant and CRM that answers messages on WhatsApp, Instagram and web chat, books appointments and opens orders, and follows each customer through the sales pipeline; it is not a simple chatbot. Comments are one more channel of that system: they are answered in the same inbox and from the same knowledge base as DMs, WhatsApp and web chat.
Who is it for?
- Instagram boutiques and e-commerce brands with product, size and price questions piling up under their posts every day
- Clinics and aesthetic centers whose before/after posts get "how many sessions?" and "how do I book?" comments
- Restaurants and cafes whose menu and campaign posts get "are you open tomorrow?" comments
- Any small team whose Reels took off and who cannot answer the comment volume by hand
How it works
- A comment arrives. A customer writes under the post: "Do you have this jacket in M?"
- It lands in the inbox. The comment shows up in your inbox as a conversation marked as an Instagram comment.
- The AI looks for the facts. It checks your knowledge base and your connected store. If the information is not there, it does not make it up.
- It writes one reply. It leaves a short public reply under the comment: "Hi! Size M is in stock. Send us a DM for colors and shipping."
- If the customer moves to DM, the conversation continues there. Personal matters such as the order, the address and the payment are handled in DM.
One point to note: the AI does not send the commenter a private message on its own. Replying to a comment by private message opens after Meta approval; today the reply is written under the comment.
Setup: three steps
| Step | Where | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Connect Instagram | My business › Channels › Messaging Channels | In the "Meta Platforms" card choose Instagram, tick your business Page and your Instagram account, and approve |
| 2. Check the comment switch | Instagram card | The "Instagram comments" switch is on by default; switch it off if you do not want comments at all |
| 3. Fill the knowledge base | My business › Knowledge › Knowledge Base | Upload products, prices, sizes, shipping and FAQs; the AI answers comments from here |
Your Instagram account must be a Professional account linked to a Facebook Page. If you connected it before September 24, 2026, the panel shows a "Reconnect Instagram to manage comments" warning; reconnecting once is enough.
If you want comments to come in but do not want the AI to write (for example to answer them yourself in the first days), switch off "Instagram Comments" in Channel AI settings. Comments keep landing in the inbox and you write the replies.
Spam comments: no reply, your call
A public reply is in front of everyone. Writing "Hi, how can we help?" from a business account under a betting or follower-selling comment pushes the spam forward. So the AI does not reply to comments that carry links or match known spam patterns. This decision is made by patterns, not left to the model.
A spam comment is not deleted or hidden; it shows in the panel and you decide. There is deliberately no automatic hiding: hiding a real customer who asked "price?" by mistake costs more than the spam. Short real comments such as "🔥" or "price?" are never treated as spam.
There are two more safeguards. The comment reply is kept short and contains no links. In the same comment thread, the same person gets at most three AI replies an hour, so if the other side is an auto-responder, two bots do not write to each other in public.
What goes in a comment, what goes in DM?
| In the comment (public) | In DM or on WhatsApp (private) |
|---|---|
| In stock or not, which sizes | Address, phone, the order |
| List price (if it is in the knowledge base) | A personal offer or discount |
| Opening hours, shipping time | Payment and receipts |
| "How do I book?" | Personal health or legal details |
In a comment the AI only gives information; it does not place an order, book an appointment or take a payment. At clinics, prices and health details are not discussed in a public comment; the AI writes a short reply and invites the person to DM. You will find this split by sector on the solutions page and in the sector posts, for example DM sales automation for Instagram boutiques.
Which language does it reply in?
The AI replies in the language the comment is written in. A follower writing in English or Arabic from abroad gets an answer in that language; no separate account or translator is needed. The details are in the multilingual customer replies post.
What it isn’t
- It is not a keyword comment bot. It understands the comment and answers from your knowledge base.
- It is not a bulk DM tool. It does not message everyone who comments; it writes one public reply.
- It is not a moderation tool that hides spam automatically. It does not reply to spam and leaves the decision to you.
- It is not a guessing machine. It does not invent a price or stock level that is not in the knowledge base.
Frequently asked questions
Can the AI auto-reply to Instagram comments?
Yes. Once you connect Instagram to inTusell, comments on your posts land in the inbox and the AI writes a short public reply to each one. It answers from your knowledge base and does not invent a price or stock level it does not have.
How do I switch comment replies on or off?
The "Instagram comments" switch on the Instagram card turns incoming comments on or off; it is on by default. Whether the AI writes to comments is set separately with the "Instagram Comments" switch in Channel AI settings.
Does the AI message the commenter privately?
No. The AI writes one public reply under the comment. Replying to a comment by private message opens after Meta approval. When details are needed, the AI invites the customer to write in DM; once they do, the conversation continues there.
What happens to spam and betting comments?
The AI does not reply to comments that carry links or match known spam patterns. The comment is still saved and shown in the panel, and you can hide or delete it. Nothing is hidden automatically, because losing a real customer’s question costs more than spam.
I connected Instagram earlier, why are comments not coming in?
Accounts connected before September 24, 2026 get the comment permission through a new Meta login. If the panel shows "Reconnect Instagram to manage comments", reconnect once; comments start coming in after that.
Does the AI open an order or an appointment from a comment?
No. Orders and personal details are not discussed in a public comment. The AI answers the question briefly and invites the customer to DM; orders, appointments and payments are handled in DM or on WhatsApp.
