Instagram DM and WhatsApp automation for Instagram boutiques

Instagram DM and WhatsApp automation for boutiques: the AI answers "price?" and "do you have my size?" in DMs, comments and WhatsApp from one inbox, 24/7.

A boutique owner steams a dress in front of a new season rack while a face-down phone glows indigo on the table.

An Instagram boutique’s inbox: the new season post took off, and hundreds of comments have landed under it: "price?", "do you have this size?", "is it in stock?", "when does shipping arrive?". At the same time five people are writing on WhatsApp, one of them in English from abroad. A one- or two-person boutique team can’t respond to everyone within two minutes; a "do you have this size" question answered late is a piece bought from another boutique. This article explains how to set up Instagram DM automation for Instagram boutiques along with WhatsApp and comment replies on inTusell, with concrete steps that require no technical knowledge.

This article is the channel leg of the Instagram boutique chapter in our sector-based "how to train your AI" series. You’ll find the training side in the series’ main article, Instagram boutique AI training, and the day-to-day operation in how to use inTusell.

Quick answer

Summary

inTusell is an AI sales assistant and CRM that answers messages on WhatsApp, Instagram and web chat, opens orders and follows each customer through the sales pipeline. Your boutique’s DMs, comments and WhatsApp messages land in one inbox. WhatsApp links by QR or linking code, Instagram through Meta login. The AI answers 24/7 and never invents size or stock.

The boutique’s channel reality

The question doesn’t come through one channel. A new post takes off and comments explode; someone else who saw the same post writes on WhatsApp; a third clicks the link in the Story and reaches you through the chat bubble on your website. Out of season, this scatter is manageable; during a sale week or on a new-collection day, it isn’t.

inTusell brings all of these channels together in a single inbox and attaches the same AI sales assistant to all of them. The emphasis here matters: this is not a chatbot, but an assistant trained to behave like an experienced boutique advisor. It understands the customer’s intent, suggests the right piece, answers size and color questions, and routes to an order, but it doesn’t invent a size or stock detail it doesn’t know, and leaves it to the team.

Who is it for?

This article is for online clothing sellers who can’t keep up with the speed and volume of incoming questions through a single channel. Typical profiles:

  • Boutiques receiving dozens of size, stock, and order questions a day from Instagram and WhatsApp.
  • Clothing, jewelry, and accessory boutiques seeing a flood of comments from new-collection and sale posts.
  • Boutiques shipping abroad that lose sales because they can’t respond in several languages.
  • From a one-person boutique to a team of a few; channels are never charged, and the benefit grows with more channels.

Connecting WhatsApp: QR or linking code today, the official line after Meta approval

WhatsApp is the busiest channel in boutique sales: orders usually close here. Today you link it with a QR code or with a linking code for your phone number, and for most boutiques that is enough.

MethodSetupMeta Business approvalWho it suits
QR code or linking codeScan a QR code with your phone or type an 8-character codeNot requiredMost boutiques that want to keep their existing number
Official line (Cloud API)Opens after Meta approvalRequiredHigh-volume brands that want the official line

The QR method works like connecting WhatsApp Web: in the panel you go to My business › Channels › Messaging Channels and click "Connect with QR", then on your phone open WhatsApp › Settings › Linked Devices › Link a Device and scan the square. If the panel is open on the same phone, choose "Link with phone number" in the same window: enter your number, press "Get code", and an 8-character linking code appears; on the phone’s Link a Device screen tap the option to link with a phone number and type the code. The number stays the same and your phone keeps working. Nothing changes on the customer’s side: they keep writing to the same number. You don’t need a new line: this is important for boutiques, because the number is often where the entire sales history lives.

A few things to know. If the phone stays offline for a long time, the link can drop; the panel warns you and the link in the warning reopens the QR window. The AI works only in one-to-one chats, never in WhatsApp groups. Each plan includes 1 WhatsApp line; extra lines are a paid add-on. The official WhatsApp line (Cloud API) opens after Meta approval; today you connect with a QR code or a linking code.

Instagram DM automation

Instagram connects through Meta login: in the panel you click "Connect All" or the Instagram tile, then pick your Facebook Page and Instagram account on the Meta screen, with no keys or tokens to copy. The account must be Professional and linked to a Facebook Page.

Once connected, DM replies are already on: the AI responds to incoming direct messages, and there is no extra switch to turn on. If you want the AI to stop answering DMs, turn off "Instagram DM" under "Per-Channel AI Control" in Advanced AI Settings; DMs then land in the inbox and your team answers them. At a boutique, DM is where "is this still available?" and "is there any S left?" questions land most often, and the channel works from the day you connect it. We don’t promise a reply time in seconds on Instagram: for most business accounts Instagram messages are fetched at intervals, which can take a few minutes.

Instagram comments: their own switch and an invitation to DM

In boutique sales, post comments are a hidden sales channel. Under a new-collection post, comments like "price?", "is it in stock?", "do you have this color?" pour in, and most go unanswered. An unanswered comment is often a customer ready to buy.

In inTusell, comment replies are switched on or off with the "Instagram comments" switch on the Instagram card; the switch is on by default. If you connected Instagram before September 24, 2026, the panel shows a "Reconnect Instagram to manage comments" warning; until you reconnect once, no comment gets an AI reply. The AI writes one short public reply to each comment. It does not reply to spam comments that carry links; you hide or delete those from the panel. Replying by private message (Reply with DM) opens after Meta approval. The details are in automatic replies to Instagram comments.

The typical flow is set up like this:

  1. The customer writes "price?" under a post.
  2. The AI leaves a short public reply on the comment ("Send us a DM for the details").
  3. When the customer sends a DM, the conversation continues there and the AI replies: size, color, stock, and shipping get sorted out and the customer is routed to an order.

That way, there’s no long price haggling in a public space; the sales conversation continues in the DM, in a single, trackable context. For boutiques, this also keeps the price from being debated in front of everyone.

From DMs to sales: size, stock, and product questions

The heart of boutique sales is the questions "do you have this, which sizes are left, would it fit me?". The AI reads these from the knowledge base. You upload the product descriptions, size and color options, the size chart, and the fabric and care information to the panel once, and the AI answers every question from there.

The most critical rule here is this: the AI does not invent size, stock, and price. The AI doesn’t guess the stock status of a piece you didn’t upload or a measurement you didn’t define. It doesn’t say things like "it’s probably M" or "I think that color is left": the kind of statement that turns into returns and complaints later. When it doesn’t know, it says so and hands the chat to the team. If your store is connected it says whether an item is in stock, never how many are left. At a boutique, a wrong size confirmation means a return, plain and simple, so the AI knowing its boundary is the most valuable feature.

With Payment tracking on, once the customer confirms the product, size and amount, the AI opens the order and sends the customer an order tracking link; if your store is connected, the purchase and payment happen on your store’s own checkout. You can find the full flow of selling from DMs in the selling from DMs automation article.

A single inbox (web chat, Telegram)

Instagram and WhatsApp are the busiest, but they aren’t the only channels. inTusell brings all of the following together in the same inbox:

ChannelConnection methodTypical boutique use
WhatsAppQR code or linking code; official line after Meta approvalThe busiest order and "where’s my shipment" channel
Instagram DMMeta login (pick Page and account)Size and stock questions after a post/Story
Instagram commentsMeta login + "Instagram comments" switch (on by default)"price?", "is it in stock?" comments under a collection
TelegramBot connectionQuestions loyal customers send to the bot
Web chatWidget on your site with one line of codeProduct page and cart questions

For the team, this means no jumping between different apps. All conversations appear on one screen. If the same customer writes on both Instagram and WhatsApp, the panel shows the likely duplicate contact; once you merge the two records, their conversations and orders sit on one contact card, and you can see what they bought last season while you talk.

You can see in detail how the channels work and what they integrate with on the solutions and integrations pages.

24/7 and multilingual responses

A significant share of boutique shopping happens outside business hours: someone who sees a post in the evening writes at night, a customer abroad messages with the time difference. While the team sleeps, the AI keeps answering: an "is this size still available?" question that arrives at night doesn’t wait for morning, and the customer is routed to the order. A question left unanswered after hours often turns into a piece bought from another boutique by morning.

Multilingual responses are decisive for boutiques that ship abroad. Whatever language the customer writes in, the AI replies in that language: English to someone writing in English, Arabic to someone writing in Arabic. You don’t need a separate channel, a separate account, or a translator for this. Fixed system messages (reminders, for example) go in Turkish to Turkish speakers and in English to everyone else.

Re-engaging the quiet customer

The quiet payoff of channel automation at a boutique is winning back the customer who showed interest and then went silent. Every boutique has customers who said "let me think about it" and disappeared. inTusell sends this customer up to 3 follow-up messages written by the AI itself. Wait times are set by sector; messages go out only within business hours (otherwise 09:00-21:00 local time) on WhatsApp, Instagram or Telegram, never from web chat. Follow-up stops when the customer replies, pays for an order or says "don’t write to me".

Channel rollout strategy

It’s best to turn automation on before entering a new-collection or sale period. In practice, we do it like this:

  1. First prepare your knowledge base. Product descriptions, the size chart, color options, shipping and return conditions, and working hours should be defined in the panel. In My business › Knowledge › Knowledge Base you can upload files (PDF, Word, Excel, CSV, TXT, images), scan your website or import your Instagram profile. We covered the details in the Instagram boutique AI training article.
  2. Start with WhatsApp and Instagram DM. WhatsApp links with a QR code or linking code, Instagram with Meta login; DM replies are already on once Instagram is connected. Most boutiques handle their order traffic here.
  3. Check the comment switch. Comment replies are switched on or off with the "Instagram comments" switch on the Instagram card; this switch is on by default. If you connected Instagram before September 24, 2026, reconnect it once; then watch the AI’s tone on low-risk comments.
  4. Choose the operating mode. New accounts start in Intern mode: the AI sends replies itself and asks you before a cancellation or refund. If you want to see every reply in the first days before a new collection, switch to Full approval; you can put a single conversation, such as a return dispute or custom tailoring, in Approval or Paused mode.
  5. Review and turn fixes into rules. In the first weeks, take a short look at replies in AI Test and in Conversations. If you see a wrong or missing answer, add the fact to the knowledge base or write a rule in AI Rules. Approvals and corrections in the Label Manager are kept as a quality record; they do not change the AI’s replies on their own.

With this flow, the system settles in before the rush. Instead of fighting fires, your team focuses only on the chats that truly need a human.

What it isn’t

To avoid putting it in the wrong category, let’s be clear:

  • It is not a bulk-messaging / spam tool. inTusell is an assistant that responds to incoming questions; it does not send unsolicited bulk DMs.
  • It is not a simple keyword-based chatbot. It’s not a "say this when they write that" scripted tree, but a sales assistant that understands intent.
  • It is not a system that changes your number. Your WhatsApp number stays the same; the customer notices no difference.
  • It is not a system that invents size, stock, and price information. It says when it doesn’t know and hands off to the team; it doesn’t make up what isn’t in the knowledge base. This is what prevents wrong size confirmations at a boutique.
  • It is not a tool that replaces the boutique. You always select, prepare, and ship the product; inTusell is the response and sales layer.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to change my WhatsApp number?

No. You link your existing boutique WhatsApp number with a QR code or with an 8-character linking code sent for your phone number; the number stays the same, your phone keeps working, and the customer notices no difference. The official WhatsApp line (Cloud API) opens after Meta approval.

Is Meta Business approval required?

Not for WhatsApp: linking with a QR code or a linking code needs no Meta Business approval. Instagram connects through Meta login: you pick your Facebook Page and Instagram account, with no keys or tokens to copy. The account must be Professional and linked to a Facebook Page. If you connected Instagram before September 24, 2026, reconnect once for comments.

Does the AI reply to post comments too?

Yes. The AI writes one short, public reply to each comment. Comment replies are switched on or off with the "Instagram comments" switch on the Instagram card; the switch is on by default. If you connected Instagram before September 24, 2026, you need to reconnect once; until then no comment gets an AI reply. On "price?" comments the AI replies briefly and invites the customer to send a DM. It does not reply to spam comments that carry links.

What happens to a customer writing from abroad or in another language?

Whatever language the customer writes in, the AI replies in that language. If you ship abroad, a customer writing in English, Arabic or German gets a reply without a separate channel. Fixed system messages such as reminders go in Turkish to Turkish speakers and in English to everyone else.

Does the AI make up size and stock status?

No. The AI does not invent a price, size or stock status, or shipping date it does not know; it says so and hands the chat to the team. If your store is connected it says whether an item is in stock, never how many are left.

When does the AI hand off to a human?

When the AI is unsure or a person is needed (a return dispute, a custom-tailoring request, a situation outside the knowledge base), it hands the chat to your team; the handoff lands on the Decisions page with the full history. You choose the account mode: Intern (default) sends replies itself and asks you before a cancellation or refund; Senior handles those itself too; in Full approval every reply on WhatsApp, Instagram and Telegram waits for your approval.

Next step

Connecting channels is half the job; the real difference is in training the AI correctly. To set up product information, the size chart, shipping and return conditions, the tone, and the boundaries, start with the series’ main article, Instagram boutique AI training, then see the day-to-day operation in how to use inTusell. To go deeper on the flow of selling from DMs, you can look at the selling from DMs automation article, review the Instagram boutiques solution page, and follow the series via pricing and all articles. For an example of the same approach in other sectors, you can also take a look at the travel agency and clinic pillar articles.
